Understanding the Mechanics of Your Septic System

At Outback Porta-Jon Inc., we believe in empowering our customers with knowledge about their septic systems. A well-functioning septic tank is crucial for the sanitation and efficiency of your property. Here, we explain how your septic tank and drain field operate, ensuring you understand the critical processes behind these essential components.

How Your Septic Tank Operates:

Your septic tank plays a pivotal role in wastewater management. Its primary job is to protect your drain field from being clogged by solids suspended in the wastewater. Inside the tank, lighter solids like grease, oils, and toilet tissue rise to the top, forming a scum layer. Conversely, heavier solids and decomposed waste settle at the bottom, creating a sludge layer. To ensure a minimal amount of solids entering your drain field, a solid outlet baffle and regular cleaning of your septic tank are essential.

How Your Drain Field Operates:

The drain field is another vital component of your septic system, constructed in permeable soils. This area consists of trenches filled with stone, atop which perforated pipes are laid. These pipes are then covered with more stone, and geo fabric is used to cover the rock. This prevents dirt and debris from infiltrating the drain field during backfilling. The grey water exits the septic tank, flows through these perforated pipes, filters through the stone, and finally percolates through the soil beneath the rock, effectively treating the wastewater.
